Viaje Skull and Bones

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Sun Grown Criollo

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 5×54

Pre Light

The Viaje Skull and Bones has a dark brown wrapper with a slightly reddish hue to it.  The foot of the wrapper has a little extra shag on the end of it and it feels well packed from that foot all the way down to the head.  There is a few small veins running through it and has a slight oil sheen on it. The wrapper has a pepper and manure aroma.  After clipping off the cap the cold draw is giving me a pepper sensation on my tongue with a hint of sweetness at the end.

1st Third

There is a lot of pepper right of the bat and that’s about all I’ve gotten off the first quarter inch or so.  When the pepper starts to finally settle I start to pick up hints of cocoa and coffee.  The burn is really wavy but is still burning.

2nd Third

The burn started to finally correct itself after the first couple inches, which is a relief.  The pepper in the cigar just never seems to end.  There is a burnt wood flavor I am starting to pick up but is really drowned out by the pepper at this point.

Final Third

The cigar ends with a burnt wood and slight fruit flavor with that pepper still hanging around.  The burn continued to burn straight after that little hiccup at the beginning.  The cigar put off a ton off thick white smoke and had a really strong room aroma.

I know a lot of people like this cigar but for me it was just too much pepper.  By the end of smoking this cigar my tongue and mouth feel so raw.  The background flavors were nice but just seemed to be  muted out by the overwhelming pepper.

Keep em burnin’

  1. Thanks for the Honest Review Griff, I’m not a major Viaje fan never found one that blew me away like it does for others, with that and their pricy tag I don’t see me seeking this or most of their products out anytime soon.
